Fifth Harmony’s Cuban Members React to Fidel Castro’s Death

(Far left: Jauregui, Second from right, Cabello) Image Group LA/ABCFidel Castro, the former president of Cuba, has died at the age of 90.  His death brought strong responses from around the world, including from the two Cuban members of Fifth Harmony: Camila Cabello and Lauren Jauregui.

Camila posted a photo of a street in Cuba on Instagram and wrote, “I want nothing more than to see the families that were divided to come together again and for all the years of pain to come to an end.”  She added in Spanish, “My heart is full of hope for Cuba.”

Lauren’s posting was a bit more extreme: she wrote, referring to Castro, “The cockroach is dead!  What joy!”  She added, “I know that my grandmas are dancing together at the party in the sky where my dear Celia Cruz is singing songs of freedom and happiness.”  Celia Cruz, who died in 20013, was a legendary Cuban musician known as the “Queen of Salsa.”

Fidel Castro was hated  because under his regime, families were involuntarily separated.  Residents were not allowed to leave the country, and those who’d left without permission weren’t allowed to return.  In addition, those who were authorized to travel weren’t allowed to bring their children with them, in order to guarantee that they’d come back.

Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi issued a statement saying, “The death of Fidel Castro marks the end of an era for Cuba and the Cuban people…Generations of Cuban political prisoners, democracy activists and families suffered under Fidel Castro’s rule.  In their name, we will continue to press the Cuban regime to embrace the political, social, and economic dreams of the Cuban people.”
