Republic RecordsDNCE is up for two American Music Awards Sunday, but today, the group finally releases its long-awaited debut album. Says frontman Joe Jonas, “It’s a great feeling to be able to get it out there.”
The self-titled disc arrives more than a year after the group’s smash single “Cake by the Ocean,” and Joe says they didn’t feel the need to rush it out. “There was really no pressure,” he tells ABC Radio.
“I put pressure on myself…to make sure that it was fun and funky and feel-good and had tidbits of…inspirations,” he adds. “[Like] if you’re listening to it, you go, ‘Oh this reminds me of this artist back in the seventies or eighties,’ but kinda having its own unique sound.”
Joe says the album is his “favorite body of work” he’s ever done — including his work with The Jonas Brothers. Speaking of which, he says, “I was actually listening to it with my brother, and it’s on repeat in his car. So it feels good to have, not only family excited for you, but we have a lot of fans that have eagerly been waiting for over a year for new material.”
DNCE is nominated for T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Favorite Pop/Rock Duo or Group on Sunday night’s AMAs. In 2008, Joe and the Jonas Brothers won the Breakthrough Artist trophy, but his big AMA memory is of the 2007 show, where he wiped out on stage during their debut AMA performance.
“I had a nice slip and fall,” he laughs. “We had this performance where this sugar glass would come down, and shatter, we’d walk through it…we never got to practice it ’cause we only had a few sheets of glass. I fell right through it and made quite the entrance!”
