Demi Lovato Recalls Profane Reaction to First Grammy Nod

Hollywood/Island/Safe HouseIt took her five albums to do it, but Demi Lovato finally has scored her first Grammy Award nomination.  In February, she’ll compete in the category of Best Pop Vocal Album, against Adele, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and SiaIn a video interview with Billboard, Demi recalls her not-safe-for-work reaction to learning the good news.

“The way that I found out was getting a phone call really early in the morning,” she recalls. “And my assistant came in and said [my manager] Phil ‘has to talk to you, get on the phone!’ So I answered it and he said, ‘You’ve just been nominated for a Grammy.’  And I literally shot up and said, ‘Shut the f*** up!!!'”

The album Demi is nominated for, Confident, produced a number of hits, but it also was praised by critics for its honesty. Demi says she’s happy that her peers in the music industry — the people who vote for the Grammys — have chosen to recognize her this year.

“Your peers are people that you’ve looked up to your entire life, people who have been nominated and won Grammys themselves,” she tells Billboard. “So to be nominated by them, people that you look up to your whole life, it’s an honor.”

The 59th Grammy Awards, hosted by James Corden, will be held February 12 in Los Angeles.
