Charli XCX Wishes She Could Have Kept “Same Old Love” for Herself

Olivia MaloneCharli XCX wrote Selena Gomez’s hit single “Same Old Love,” but it seems she had a bit of seller’s remorse after passing the tune along.

“Actually ‘Same Old Love’ was one of those songs that once I’d heard Selena sing it — and she sounded so great — I was like, ‘Oh my God, I want this song for myself,” she tells Grazia magazine.

Charli admits the song was a much better fit for Selena at the time. “Partly because she had such a high profile relationship which was all over the press, it felt very real coming from her and I think a lot of the audience could really connect because of what had been going on,” she says. “It was cool that really brought that song to life.”

Perhaps most impressive is that Charli managed to capture what Selena was going through without any input from Selena herself. “That definitely happens sometimes for sure,” she says. “But this particular song was something I had written and she loved it and felt it related to her and that’s really how that came about.”
