Image Group LA/ABCNever underestimate the power of TV when it comes to selling music. Billboard reports that the American Music Awards last month resulted in an across the board 35 percent sales gain for the 20 songs that were performed on the ABC telecast.
Billboard reports that one beneficiary of the exposure on the AMAs was “Closer” by the Chainsmokers featuring Halsey. Downloads of the song increased 25 percent compared to the previous week. Bruno Mars‘ “24K Magic” got a 36-percent sales bump, while Fifth Harmony‘s “That’s My Girl” scored an impressive 90-percent increase. Maroon 5‘s “Don’t Wanna Know,” which closed the show, received a 64-percent sales boost.
In addition to downloads, streams of the performed songs were up. Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj‘s “Side to Side” scored a 15-percent increase in streams, while The Weeknd‘s “Starboy” saw a 12-percent gain. Niall Horan‘s “This Town,” meanwhile, saw an 18-percent increase in streams.
