Columbia Records / Disruptor RecordsThe Chainsmokers have released a brand new song for the new year, “Paris,” — a tune they first teased at their biggest concert yet: a December 30 show at the L.A. Convention Center. Chainsmokers member Drew Taggart provides lead vocals, as he did on their mega-smash “Closer.”
The Grammy-nominated duo has also dropped a lyric video for the song, starring Instagram model Alexis Ren. Strangely, the video was not filmed in Paris, France but at Casa Malca in Tulum [too-LOOM], Mexico. It mostly features Ren flaunting her bod in a variety of sexy swimwear as she takes dips in the ocean and pool, and generally enjoys a beach lifestyle.
The song mentions Paris briefly in the line, “We were staying in Paris/To get away from your parents,” but it’s not about the city. The opening of the lyric video defines “Paris” as, “a sentimental yearning for a reality that isn’t genuine,” and, “an irrecoverable condition for fantasy that evokes nostalgia or day dreams.”
Now, that last sentence doesn’t make much sense, but the whole thing seems to indicate that in the song, “Paris” is a metaphor for some sort of dream-like situation the couple imagines themselves to be in in order to avoid what’s really going on.
