Bruno Mars Lived in Abandoned Hawaiian Zoo as a Child

Bruno Mars Lived in Abandoned Hawaiian Zoo as a ChildCBSNews/60 MINUTES Bruno Mars wasn’t always living the 24-karat life. In a new interview with CBS’ 60 Minutes airing Sunday, the singer takes us inside the one-bedroom house he used to live in as a child.

Bruno, his father and his brother spent more than two years living in the concrete cabin, located inside an abandoned bird zoo called Paradise Park in Hawaii. Now, the structure is nothing more than overgrown ruins.

“It didn’t have plants growing inside. I don’t know what happened to the roof. But the bed would be right there in the middle,” Bruno says. “We’d all sleep in one bed.”

Despite the tight living conditions, Bruno says his memories of that time were “the best.” “We had each other and it never felt like it was the end of the world,” he says.

No matter how rough things got, he says his family was always determined to figure things out. “Maybe that’s why I have this mentality when it comes to the music,” he says. “Because I know I’m going to figure it out. Just give me some time.”

60 Minutes airs November 20 at 7 p.m. ET on CBS.
